Editorial Reviews:

Colorado rancher Atticus Cody receives word that his wayward younger son, Scott, has committed suicide in Resurrection, Mexico. When Atticus travels south to recover Scott's body, he is puzzled by what he finds there and begins to suspect murder. Illuminating those often obscure chambers of the human heart, Atticus is the story of a father's steadfast and almost unfathomable love for his son, a mystery that Ron Hansen's fiction explores with a passion and intensity no reader will be able to resist.

Summary: Atticus, a review.
Comment: Atticus is a story of Atticus Cody, who learns of his son, Scott's, suicide in Mexico, and goes on a search for the truth. Ron Hansen uses suspense and mystery in this writing. He feeds the reader a little information at a time that leads to the outcome, pulling you in to the story. There are multiple plot twists in the story, keeping you on your toes and interested in the book. However, slow to start, the story picks up speed as Atticus reaches Mexico and begins to find the answers he is looking for. Atticus begins to suspect murder, and the story turns from a search of a heart broken father, to a murder mystery. It seams Atticus is more interested in finding why his son was murdered, than getting his body back to Colorado. Part way through the book the story switches points of view, from Atticus to Scott, and the story starts again. This is an interesting writing strategy, because it helps to answer any questions the reader may have, while still keeping him or her in suspense. Although some parts are hard to believe, this story is an all around good read, and is guaranteed to keep you in suspense.

Summary: Atticus: An Insightful and Interesting Novel
Comment: When I began reading Atticus I didn't realize I was going to be reading a mystery novel. If I had known it was a mystery novel I probably would have put the book back down. Atticus starts off rather slow with a bit too much detail about characters who have little significance in the book as a whole. If you are able to endure this without giving up on the book then it takes off into a wild mysterious novel which twists and turns when you least expect it to. Not only was it a fascinating murder mystery, but it was also a very well written story about a father and his undying love for his son who is always messing up. Hansen does a fantastic job in tying the story together with a great passage from the bible regarding a father and a son. By the time the reader turns the last page he has been exposed to and learns the meaning of true love. All in all Atticus is a very insightful and interesting novel which I highly recommend to anyone who enjoys a meaningful yet fun read.

Summary: Atticus
Comment:
Atticus was not my favorite book in the world, but it was an interesting story that was suspenseful and surprising. People who like mysteries and stories that are filled with moral lessons about life and forgiveness would really enjoy Atticus.
This was a story about the 65 year old cattle farmer Atticus Cody and his son Scott. Atticus was an old fashioned, hard working farmer who lived a simple life. Scott was 40 years old and had not done anything with his life. He was always partying and spending his father's money, but Atticus loved him no matter what. One day, Atticus learned that his son had committed suicide in his home in Mexico. Atticus went to Mexico to go to Scott's funeral and to take care of everything that needed to be done.
As the story went on, Atticus, who refused to believe that his son had killed himself, began to find evidence that led him on the trail of a murderer. When Atticus was nearing the end of his investigation, the plot took and unexpected twist and an unbelievable event occurred.
This book will keep the reader on edge for almost the entire story. Once past the unbelievably boring first chapter, the story begins to build momentum and does not stop until the end.

Summary: Atticus: A Review
Comment: In the beginning of this gripping novel of a father who tragically loses his son, we are given a background and description of Atticus' life as a rancher, among other things. This part of the book is mind-numbingly boring. As the story progresses though, it begins to gain momentum, becoming more and more interesting as the pages turn. As Atticus travels to Mexico to identify his sons' body, reportedly a suicide, he becomes increasingly convinced that his son was murdered. This story is riveting, and the ending is a complete surprise. This book is a good read for anyone, and I would highly recommend it.

Summary: Complete waste of time? I think not.
Comment: Atticus, the story of a 67-year-old cattle rancher from Colorado and the search for his thought-to-be-dead son, not only exceeded my expectations, but has proven to be an exceptional mystery novel. When Atticus Cody receives the call that his artist son, Scott, has committed suicide, he travels to Resurrection, Mexico only to find something amiss. There to search for answers to his son's alien lifestyle and clues to his sudden death, Atticus Cody gains new knowledge concerning his son's demise; he was not suicidal, but rather the victim of murder. Exposing this new plot twist, Ron Hansen takes the reader for a ride, packed with exciting new revelations on every page. Full of countless twists and turns, the gripping narration keeps the reader glued to the story, ultimately leading to the biggest shocker of all. Though slow to start, the pace gradually increases with the realization of Scott's murder, but fluctuates throughout the remainder of the novel. The story concludes in a most unexpected fashion, so be prepared for a big surprise; the ending itself makes up for much of the frustration and confusion created regarding setting and characters. The abundance of detail and wealth of information can lead to some misunderstandings concerning plot particulars, though the story becomes much clearer once finished. Although the complexity of the characters can be seen as a nuisance at times, I see it as one of the novel's strong points; the skill required to add so much color and life to a story is indeed praiseworthy. The novel is presented from the viewpoints of both father and son, which both answer various questions that form when reading the book; the dual perspectives help give the story more depth, which in my opinion, allow more room for satisfaction (which is always a good thing.) Overall, this book provided an enjoyable read, though proved to be almost too informative at times (especially in the beginning), making it hard to follow. Though definitely not the most exciting reading experience I've had, I definitely recommend this book to others.
