Summary: A good foundation.
Comment: I must start with the statement that I really like the book. The writing is generally very clear. The fundamentals are covered well. I would have given 5 stars if it was not for a couple short comings. 1)The only photos are of Dave posing! The techniques are illustrated with drawings.(low budget feel)
2)The history is interesting, but ... I'm not really counting pages here but it seemed like half the book. I'm more interested in defensive tactics than historical anecdotes or apocryphal tales of Krav Maga saving the day! Give me more techniques and real, detailed, accounts of true incidents! Please forgive the sarcasm it's one of my major faults. I like the book very much. I am doing the workout and... yup I'm sore!

EVERYWHERE!

Nothing is perfect when viewed from the jaundiced eye, but if you want a good workout and good info on proper form and some viable techniques for self defense, you cant do too much better as a first step. It won't make you an I.D.F. commando but it's a good starting place to introduce you to a valid , modern system.

Summary: Great book for beginners who are interested
Comment: I personally found this book by complete accident a friend of mine in college was extremely worried about having to walk around campus at night alone, which I thought was a disgrace. I decided to teach her some combative type training but all I have ever used was a karate based system that was a trade off style of fighting. So at Barnes and Nobles I came upon this book compared it to all the others in the self-defense section and decided it would provide the easiest moves to learn that would give her confidence she could protect herself. Then when I got home and read it I decided that I should begin to practice it myself as well since it made sense the way David portrays the discipline. Plus as an added bonus David has to be the first author I have ever emailed and gotten as warm a response as his. He was very friendly and admitted that do to constraints on time he limited the book to beginning information only but it is a good start for those who are interested in an exciting new emerging discipline for self-defense.

Summary: A must have book
Comment: This book is an absolute must have for anyone interested in learning practical no-nonsense self defense.
After being bogged down for years in the classical mess of traditional martial arts (hey, don't blame me, Bruce Lee said it himself!) I decided that I wanted to learn what the best were doing (For anyone who doesn't know, Krav Maga is what they teach the military and the police over in Israel, and those guys use it every day, FOR REAL). This book covers all the basics that you need to know. And as all good martial artist and fighters know, it's all about the basics. The written instructions of the book are accompanied with easy to follow diagrams and a 12-week workout plan is included in the back of the book. In addition, this book covers the origins of Krav Maga, which is a very interesting read.
After reading some of the reviews listed here I decided to find out a little more about the author, David Kahn. Mr. Kahn has studied Krav Maga for the last 13 years, the last 10 of those years has been spent traveling back and forth to Israel twice a year to train with the head of the system, Grandmaster Haim Gidon. He is also the only American on the board of the Israeli Krav Maga Association, the original association created by Krav Maga's founder Grandmaster Imi Lichtenfeld (1910-1998).

Summary: Best Defense Book on the Market
Comment: Over the last six months that I have used David Kahns book, it proves itself to be more than the essential guide that it is sold as.The book is well thought out with each chapter building on the previous segments information. The directives are clear and succinctly written. The pictures that acompany the information help to further instill the the techniques into the practical art that Krav Maga is intended to be.
Much to my exitment I found that Mr. Kahn and his brother, Abel, have opend a gym not far from me in New Jersey. Having just finished my first weeks classes with Mr. Kahn and his staff I have nothing but praise for the professionalism of the Kahn brothers and their staff. The high commendations given to them by agencies such as; The United States Coast Guard, United States Marshals, FBI, New Jersey State Police, and numerous municipal police departments, barely scratch the surface of the Kahns passion and zeal for teaching the Krav Maga they have learned in the past decade of working with the grand master of this art in Israel.

Summary: Don't buy this book
Comment: When I told my KM instructor that I read this book he told me that this guy doesn't know what the heck he's talking about. In the back of the book it says that he's not afilliated or approved by the KM association. And for good reason. The guy only took a few KM classes in Israel and now thinks he is an authority on writing a KM book. Although it's greatly written, I wouldn't recommend buying this unapproved product, written by some nobody. If you want something solid, get the 5 DVD set by Levine, which comes from the KM association. Sure you might spend a little more, but you won't have to try to dissect complicated moves with a few cartoon figures and written language, plus you get something genuine.
