Editorial Reviews:

On a fateful night five centuries ago, three mages made a desperate last stand, sacrificing everything to preserve the only hope of goodness in the beautiful, doomed land of Alasea. Now, on the anniversary of that ominous night, a girl-child ripens into the heritage of lost power. But before she can even comprehend her terrible new gift, the Dark Lord dispatches his winged monsters to capture her and bring him the embryonic magic she embodies.

Fleeing the minions of darkness, Elena is swept toward certain doom--and into the company of unexpected allies. There she forms a band of the hunted and the cursed, the outcasts and the outlaws, to battle the unstoppable forces of evil and rescue a once-glorious empire . . .

Summary: Can't say I'd recommend ...
Comment: The prose in this novel is well written. The story, however, was only at times engaging. I found the prologue a bit trite and skipped reading it. The book switches back and forth consistently between characters and instead of giving the tale a riveting edge, it was done in a manner that was confusing and unnecessary. I think the author has talent, but I would not recommend this book or series to friends.

Summary: Not a big fantasy reader.
Comment: I'll state this first off the bat so you can see where my review is coming from. I'm not a big fantasy reader. I've maybe read 4 fantasy books and only enjoyed one before I read this one. So with that out of the way I really liked this book. There aren't too many crazy weird names to remember even though in this world a lot of name have and apostrophes in them. This is the first book in the series and kind of has an epic quest feel like the Lord of the Rings with a group of different races and characters all joining to help a cause against evil. All the characters a great and the author really lets you get to know them really well. I kept reading because I wanted to know not only what happened in the book but what would happen to the characters. This is a great setup for the series and have already ordered the next in the series. On a side note this author is the other pen-name of James Rollins and have been a fan of him forever and for some reason just now found out this was another pen-name of his. How I never figured that out I have no idea.

Summary: The BEST Series Ever!!!
Comment: I love this book, the next book, the entire series! I really cared about the characters and the storyline didn't involve me remembering the names of 30 made up races and a few made up languages. Thank you Mr. Clemens for a darkly beautiful series that I was able to enjoy without needing a companion book or some kind of glossary of terms.

Summary: Good Read
Comment: It started off a little odd; the author didn't take much time explaining the setup of his fantasy world before dropping the reader smack-dab in the middle of the action. BUT at the same time there was no slow buildup, no wondering "When is the story going to start?" Fans of action stories and movies will appreciate this. The characters are well-developed and intelligent; the female lead neither whines nor breaks b***s. There is a huge cast of characters that starts out spread across the land and eventually of course they all cross paths and each affects the destiny of the others. In this manner the author is able to describe and discuss the different races and cultures that make up his world, from elves to ogres.
This is a gorier story than many fantasy tales; the lead villain delights in torture and dark magic which the author delights in describing in frightening but not too graphic detail.
The theme of the story is obvious as soon as one opens the book. The reader is told that he is reading a forbidden text that should only be read under strict scholarly supervision, and the introduction by the "author" is sentimental to the point of schmaltz about the value of writing and passing on the truth, no matter how unpleasant.
All in all, a fine, entertaining read.

Summary: Enthralling
Comment: This series is one of the better series I've read. It's fast paced with unique characters, and some of the most evil bad guys I've read.
I started it as a "maybe" book... I wasn't sure if I would like it so I bought a used copy of the first in the series... and I LOVED it! There are many twists and turns throughout the series, some easily guessed, others leave you baffled until the last minute...

Keep in mind that everyone has different opinions... So while one person hates this book, someone else out there will love it... and vice versa...
