Editorial Reviews:

For decades they have remained close, sharing treasured recipes, honored customs, and the challenges of women shaped by ancient ways yet living modern lives. They are the Hindi-Bindi Club, a nickname given by their American daughters to the mothers who left India to start anew—daughters now grown and facing struggles of their own.

For Kiran, Preity, and Rani, adulthood bears the indelible stamp of their upbringing, from the ways they tweak their mothers’ cooking to suit their Western lifestyles to the ways they reject their mothers’ most fervent beliefs. Now, bearing the disappointments and successes of their chosen paths, these daughters are drawn inexorably home.

Kiran, divorced, will seek a new beginning—this time requesting the aid of an ancient tradition she once dismissed. Preity will confront an old heartbreak—and a hidden shame. And Rani will face her demons as an artist and a wife. All will question whether they have the courage of the Hindi-Bindi Club, to hold on to their dreams—or to create new ones.

An elegant tapestry of East and West, peppered with food and ceremony, wisdom and sensuality, this luminous novel breathes new life into timeless themes.

Summary: Really enjoyed it.
Comment: I picked this up thinking Oh, I'll give it a try - I was so glad I did.....such a lovely story. I really enjoyed the characters and how they interacted - real feelings and real problems. I loved watching this intimate story about a culture I am so clueless about - I learned a lot and can't wait to try to put some of the recipes together. I recommend it if you are looking for a great story about real people and real relationships.

Summary: Surprised.
Comment: I wanted to buy something else. But then I saw this book. The cover caught my attention, and I decided to buy it! Mrs. Pradhan really had me hooked the whole time! She knows how to tell tales with her clever plots and melodic words.
Yes, I have to admit I had broken the rule, which is "do not judge the book by its cover." And I don't regret doing it. :)

Summary: More on the immigrant experience
Comment: I have always been fascinated by the experience of immigrants in their new lands and particularly the experience of the next generation. How they synthesize(sometimes) conflicting cultures, customs and beliefs is amazing and will provide fodder for writers forever. Monica Pradhan gives us her take on this from the mother/daughter perspective, another subject filled with endless possibilities. She does it with humor, tears, grace and tasty recipes. What more could one want? A very easy read but certainly not "fluff". Can't wait for the next book!

Summary: A must read for the NRI
Comment: This book is a must read for the non resident Indian. Indians raised in America rarely understand the wisdom and logic behind their Indian rooted parents, until they are adults themselves. Cultural ties, values and morals become significantly important once you realize you have strayed away from them. Hind sight is 20/20. The author brings this point home in this inspiring novel. Monica is a fascinating author, brilliant in her research and writing. I had the pleasure of discussing this book with her over speakerphone. It's amazing to discuss her thoughts in creating her characters and the story lines. What a lovely woman and quite generous of her time with our book club. A must read for the NRI.
