Editorial Reviews:

In recent years, the grappling arts have proven to be the most effective form of combat in mixed martial arts (MMA) and no-holds-barred (NHB) competitions. Above all others, the Gracie brand of Brazilian jujitsu has become recognized as the preeminent fighting style in unarmed combat. Now Renzo Gracie—one of the most successful athletes in the world-renowned Gracie family—reveals the inner workings of the art.

With nearly 30 years of training, Gracie competes at the highest levels and is a champion of numerous grappling, MMA, and NHB events. Also an instructor of many students who have gone on to become champions, Gracie now provides that instruction to help you develop the same techniques and strategies that the Gracie clan has used to dominate their opponents. In Mastering Jujitsu, Gracie covers it all in depth—from the art's origins and techniques to practical applications that even the most experienced black belts will benefit from. Starting with isolated skill development techniques, you will progress to a full set of tactics and fight plans and become familiar with the concept of combat phases. You will learn how to attack from any phase as well as how to react to your opponent. Whether you're in a bottom position or attacking from the top, Gracie reveals the key strategies designed to give you the upper hand in close combat fighting.

Summary: One of the best books on Martials Arts...
Comment: When it comes to a book than explains how martial arts training can realistically fit in with a real self-defence situation and the truth about training martial arts for self-defence or competiting in tournaments, there few books out there that can do it better and more concisely than this and it has a lot of information to offer that I have not seen in any other martial arts book. I find the book to be misnamed however; the core of it is about Brazilian Jujitsu, but it is pretty much about MMA on the whole and not just Jujitsu. One reason why this book is so good is because whenever the authors make a statement, they have a tendency to qualify what they say with either historical reference or indepth explanations. If they tell you to use a certain use a certain technique or not to use a technique, they usually tell why precisely why. In essence, the authors have a very good understanding of unarmed combat and how a fight can unfold; knowing and applying the information in this book can mean the difference between victory and defeat. An ABSOLUTE must for any martial artist, the casual practioner or pro fighter.

Summary: alright
Comment: An alright book, reviews a lot of positions which is important, but not enough submisions in my opinion, however it does cover a variety of techniques for takedowns and those are very important. It does not show counter-attacks nor defense if you get in trouble.

Summary: Good book for the beginner
Comment: The main complaint I had was that I was expecting to see alot more on techniques rather than history. About 1/2 of the book is spent discussing the history of how BJJ began and how it has evolved MMA. The technique section was OK and didn't have anything new. This would be a great book for someone who's just started doing BJJ, or thinking about getting into BJJ

Summary: not great, not terrible
Comment: There wasn't anything new here but if you don't have any other books on jujitsu, it's o.k.

Summary: The Whys and Wherefores of Grappling
Comment: This is one of the earlier books on grappling from the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu perspective. Renzo is one of the big name Gracies form the Gracie Barra school and an early Pride veteran. He is also cousin to Royce Gracie of UFC fame. And that is where this book leans. The combat applications of Jiu Jitsu.

This is both a how-to guide and a snapshot of where Jiu Jitsu was in relation to MMA and self defence a few years back. The game has changed, but the book is still relevant. The book is largely about grappling against the striker, but includes enough striking work to show where jiu jitsu fits into the big picture.
