Spotlight customer reviews:
Customer Rating: Summary: Good review but a bit dated. Comment: This is a good review of the basic sweeps for different situations. However, it is basic and the presentation is a bit dated. No real use for competitive judo, as far as, set-ups and combos. Still a good book if looking for basics or a practioner of a different art other than judo who would like to increase knowledge of foot sweeps. Customer Rating: Summary: Desent Book Comment: This book is filled with a lot of pictures, but at times they are hard to follow what actually the author is doing. I would not recommend this book for beginners! Customer Rating: Summary: Great step-by-step guide to foot throws Comment: I had the great pleasure of getting the snot kicked out of me by Dr. Nishioka at a judo seminar some 20 years ago. He is not only one of the best practitioners ever to compete in the sport but an excellent instructor and lecturer as well. I learned more during those few hours than I did in many of the preceding months.
This fine text covers the dynamics of sweeps, reels, and leg throws in an easy to read and understand manner. While you cannot learn any martial art purely from a book, the graphics are clear and the step-by-step explanations are excellent. It is an excellent supplement for judo training. Practitioners of other martial arts can still benefit from understanding the principles of unbalancing and throwing an opponent. While I have studied judo in the past, I'm almost entirely focused on karate today. Many of the concepts and techniques discussed in this book are equally applicable to both arts.
