Editorial Reviews:

Boklao a rogue fighter, Wingchun, a small town girl—together they must face the Imperial Army, the Heaven & Earth Rebellion, the Bandits of the Eight Immortals, and a ruthless killer from the very edge of the world, all in a desperate quest to discover the truth behind their own pasts—a truth that threatens the lives of everyone around them—and to unravel the mystery of the Fist of the Elders—the secret martial art that caused the utter destruction of the Shaolin Temple itself...

Destiny and consequence collide in the first novel from acclaimed martial arts author Rene Ritchie. Legends of Wingchun: Embers of the Shaolin brings the classic folk-story behind the fighting system of Bruce Lee to stunning new life in the grandest tradition of the Chinese hero epic (wuxia).

Summary: WingChun Legends
Comment: Wingchun, one of the short, in-close fist styles of Chinese Wu Shu, has, like other Chinese martial arts, many legends associated with it. This book expounds and expands on a combination of several of them.
The writing style is very cinamatographic in nature, and, at times, a little disjointed. It is, however, an engaging tale told in an action-oriented manner.
It's certainly worth the read for anyone who may have the slightest interest in the martial novels that have a base in China.

Summary: Excellent wu xia fiction
Comment: Wing Chun is one of the most popular forms of southern chinese kung fu. It's history is largely unknown, and rooted in myth. Rene Ritchie, a recognized authority and author on both the marital art of wing chun and its legendary beginnings, has drawn on his extensive knowledge of that style of kung fu to produce a novel of the wu xia genre entitled 'Legends of Wing Chun: Embers of the Shaolin'.

For those unfamiliar with this type of genre, the wu xia, literally marital knights, inhabit their own martial art world, or jiang hu, where the protagonists are bound by a chivalrous code which tends to conflict with their individual feelings. In a nutshell (without daring so much as to over-generalize) the hero/anti-hero is customarily an innocent youth inflicted with a tragedy of sorts who embarks upon a quest, and thereby attains self-discovery and invincible martial art abilities, by way of either a reclusive master/mentor, or by stumbling upon a mystical manual, and/or finding a peerless weapon. Greatness is thrust upon them, they earn jiang hu respect, and rise to lead a preeminent sect, restore peace, or vanquish foreign invaders in historically-referenced tales.

In this case, Ritchie has cleverly used the genuine origin myths of wing chun kung fu as the backbone around which he fleshes out an engrossing and entertaining wu xia story. This is not history but fiction. And rollicking good fiction that keeps you eagerly turning the pages. But like any genre, it tends to appeal mainly to its die-hard fans. Some people love westerns or mysteries or gothic novels, while others are ambivalent. If you are a fan of wu xia fiction, you'll love this book. If you've never encountered wu xia fiction, 'Legends of Wing Chun: Embers of the Shaolin' would be an excellent introduction to the genre.

Summary: I Love This Book!
Comment: With all the varying stories behind Wing Chuns history I'm sure there a few people that might think this book is inaccurate. But I welcomed the authors take on the Wing Chun story. I could not put this book down and now most of my students are reading it as well. I can't wait for the next one.... should be great!

Summary: Outstanding... A Kung Fu Masterpiece!!!
Comment: This is an instant kung fu classic. Set in the tradition of mythical China, Rene Ritchie brings us back to a time of folklore, rebellion, underground societies and secret fighting arts. The novel is a beautifully written tale of desperation, fate, love, and self-realization. It also introduces one of the most effective fighting arts in the world in a new way. What's more, the fight sequences are described in such detail that you feel as if you're watching it in a movie. I happily recommend this book to anyone who loves adventure, martial arts, cowboy westerns, mythical stories or sci-fi.
