Authors Vladimir Putin, Vasily Shestakov, and Alexy Levitsky give a complete history of judo, from its origins in Japanese jujitsu through its development into an Olympic sport, including Russia's contributions to the art. The rules and basic concepts are covered, followed by detailed instruction in break-falling, throwing techniques, and ground grappling. Judo theory is examined, and key practice points are presented, as well as strategies for the beginner and an exploration of kuzushi, Judo's art of unbalancing. Lastly, the authors present the self-defense techniques of judo and introduce the unique Russian art of combat sambo.

Customer Rating: Summary: Nothing about Putin except for his picture on the cover Comment: Don't buy this book to learn about Putin himself or his Judo philosophy. This is a basic guide to techniques, as the other reviewers have discussed.
The book doesn't disclose anything about Putin -- it doesn't even give his rank or tournament record.
Customer Rating: Summary: Good book Comment: Although this book does not really break new ground, and in some ways it is going backwards 30 years with its line drawings rather than color photos, it is still a solid book which deserves to be a part of any comprehensive judo library. The technical material is very good, but somewhat basic.
Customer Rating: Summary: Putin et al.. very readable .. Excellent oveview Comment: I was pleased to find such a useable manual by Putin et al. The Kodokan system is obviously central to their presentation. One of the things a enjoyed most are the illustrated alternative techniques keying off of a basic throw..excellent! The illustrations are all hand drawn as a real pleasure to look at. There are some very useful SAMBO techniques shown which I enjoyed, and a good section on defense against weapons which are very cleverly illustrated. I'd recommend the book highly.
Customer Rating: Summary: Judo:History, Theory, Practice Comment: Very nice book for Judo learning. History is very good. Theory is very European and well explained. Practice is also European. This is an excellent instruction manual for beginners, advanced students, and instructors. Very easy to read.
Customer Rating: Summary: If you are a Judo book collector Comment: I rated this book with 4 stars for two reasons:
A. It is reasonably well written book, and for its quality of writing it deserves no less than 4 stars
B. It does not deserve 5 stars because it does not excel at anything. It touches many subjects, but it does not give you much depth on any of these.
If you already have some other Judo books such as Kodokan Judo, Best Judo, A-Z of Judo, and if you've read some sports nutrition and conditioning guides than this book will not give you much more over it.
On the other hand, if you are a book collector, specially a Judo book collector you may want to have this book since it is partially written by Vladimir Putin, even though it is not clear which sections are written by Vladimir Putin.
Two other "co-authors" are distinguished Russian Judo coaches.
