Editorial Reviews:

In order to be able to train effectively in Jiu-Jitsu, this book has been constructed to cover the basic positions, techniques and combinations required. "Jiu-Jitsu Training" moves on from the author's first book, "Jiu-Jitsu - The Basics", and is directed at every Jiu-Jitsuka who has learned the basics and wants to improve. In more than a thousand illustrative photographs, the techniques are explained step by step. In addition to this, the reader will find an introduction to self-defence in groundwork. Themes about self-defence against attacks with weapons (stick and knife) as well as against attacks using firearms at close range are also included, as well as lessons concerning locking, throwing, striking and kicking techniques. This book will not only allow every Jiu-Jitsuka to consequently prepare him/herself effectively for a grading test, it will also provide the trainer with a comprehensive reference book. There are more than a thousand step by step photographs.

Summary: Actual Self-Defense Jiu-Jitsu, Not The Sport Version
Comment: This book, like all the books written by Braun and published by Meyer & Meyer, has the same good quality format and layout of material that has become a staple in these books. Color photographs printed on glossy paper and taken from good angles with contrasting backgrounds to make the subjects in the photographs stand out, well written and easy to read, but as always, there were sections that I felt could have benefited greatly with the addition of more detailed text. Now on to the specifics of this particular book.

As one might not necessarily expect, this book focuses on the actual martial art of Jiu-Jitsu, and is primarily geared towards the self-defense aspect and shows a wide variety of techniques that are, for the most part, explained fairly well and with some good detail. Obviously, there are areas that could have benefited from a bit more detailed descriptions, especially on some of the individual techniques themselves, but that is a minor annoyance.

The author goes into pretty good detail demonstrating a wide variety of defenses against a wide array of attacks ranging from defending against unarmed attacks, to defending against; sticks, knives, etc.

Although I didn't agree with absolutely everything the author said in this book, I did find myself in agreement with a lot of it to a certain degree. This book is what I would consider on about a intermediate level and is not one that you would be disappointed in. However, if you are looking for additional books on self-defense, although not primarily jiu-jitsu. Here are just a couple of them.

Summary: Very well done
Comment: I saw this book at Borders and as soon as I got home I ordered it. As a karate practicioner of many years I can highly recommend "Jiu-Jitsu Training" to both the beginner and the experienced martial artist who wants to expand his knowledge. The book is well illustrated and all the techniques are easy to understand. There is no space wasted on history or warm up exercises, just page after page of useful defenses against armed and unarmed attack.
As 99% of the technigues are performed while standing, you need to also buy Braun's excellent "Grappling effective groundwork" to learn the ground fighting aspect of this form of Jiu-Jitsu.
The experienced martial arts practitioner will want to include other books in his library, but for the beginner these two books will get you well on the way to learning how to defend yourself. I haven't read Braun's "Jiu-Jitsu Basics" but if it's the same high quality as the other books it should be very useful to the novice.
