This is the first monograph in English on the stunning series "One hundred and eight heroes of the Suikoden". "The Suikoden" is the Japanese adaptation of the 14th-century Chinese vernacular novel "Shuihu zhuan", which recounts the exploits of a group of brave and righteous rebels on Mount Liang. "The Suikoden" was enormously popular in Japan during the 19th century. It was Kuniyoshi’s initial designs for the single-sheet print series "The one hundred and eight heroes of the Suikoden (Tsûzoku Suikoden gôketsu hyakuhachinin no hitori)" -- in which the full-length portraits of the heroes are charged with a new sense of dynamism -- that spurred a "Suikoden" craze in Edo (present-day Tokyo). This publication reproduces the 74 known designs of the series in full color, each accompanied by an explanatory text. Many of the designs still inspire Japanese tattooists, and supplementary information on this subject is also included in the book.

Comment: This is a very well researched book with high quality scans of the original artwork. The price tag is a just a bit high for a softcover coffee table book.

Comment: The other reviewers have done a great job highlighting the most important reasons this book is great, so I'll just add that what makes it an other books like this a great buy is the price tag. It is a cheap way to get a good look at many Kuniyoshi prints without paying the asinine price of the hardcover museum editions. Its a book of great art to be enjoyed by fans of Ukiyo-e but also should be a center piece at any good tattoo shop.

Comment: The prints in this book are fantastic, large with great color reproduction. It also an excellent read for anyone interested in japanese woodblock printing. An all round excellent book.

Summary: vividly orgasmic in visual and poetic aspects
Comment: The cover even makes me kind of wonder. Its paperback although the pages are pretty durable. I like the little stories about each character. The pictures are breathtaking and beautiful.
