Editorial Reviews:

This is one of the finest and most comprehensive works ever presented on aiki-do. Sensei Robert Koga (former premier "Law Enforcement Instructor" for the LAPD and consultant for countless other agencies in the United States and around the world) takes us beyond the theory and into the real world of practical aiki-do to teach techniques that have been tried and proven in real-life situations. This volume includes advanced joint locks and takedowns, more practical techniques for self-defense, as well as unique and effective aiki-do for the more advanced student. (Approx. 55 min.)

Comment: Aikido By Sam Combes Volume 4
Bokken and Jo

First, I want to point out that this web page has cross referenced information from two different video instruction series on aikido from two different creators. It is really unfortunate because I'm sure the creators have invested a lot of time, effort and money into creating video series which students and practitioners will find valuable. Please, look at picture of the cassete cover. It is a picture of a cassete volume from Robert Koga's Practical Aikido series. Look at the "editorial review." It is a review of Robert Koga's Practical Aikido. Please, look at the title of the cassete this web page is offering to sell. It is "Aiki-do Volume 4 by Sam Combes." Look at the "Starring actor or performer" under "Product details." It is Sam Combes. Sam Combes is the creator of the 5 volume series titled, "Aiki-do" While Robert Koga is the creator of the 5 volume video series titled, "Practical Aikido" Because of the cross referenced information on this web page, an interested customer such as yourself cannot be sure of which product you would receive if you would order it here on amazon.com. So, I recommend that if you wish to purchase it, do so directly from Black Belt Magazine by filling out their order form, calling their 800 number or purchase from their website at www.blackbeltmag.com. That way you can be sure that you will get what you intend to buy.

With the above warning brought to your attention, I feel more comfortable to offer you my review of Sam Combes' "Aiki-do Volume 4" given below.

Sam Combes demonstrates an Aikido exercise using the Bokken called Happo giri or cutting 8 ways.

Three basic stances used in aikido are demonstrated: Shi zen tai, aikitai, yoshitai

The jo or short stick used in this video is not the short stick of about 3 feet in length. Rather, Sam Combes explains that the length of the jo when held erect at your side should extend from contact with the floor up to your armpit.

Sam Combes uses the jo just described to perform and demonstrate a kata type exercise called Jushichi no jo twice followed by a step by step demonstration of fine points of the moves and explanation of moves in a combat situation.

The bunkai or application of the kata is demonstrated both with the jo and without a weapon in an empty hand combat situation. A third demonstration shows the application of the jo kata being used against another person also wielding a jo.

Kihon no bokken or basic moves of a wooden sword are demonstrated.

Towards the end of the video self defense applications against knife attacks along with advanced techniques against chokes and face punches are also demonstrated.

Martial art weapons enthusiasts of all styles may find this volume 4 of Aikido by Sam Combes to be a valuable addition to their current curriculum of martial art weaponry.

Two other videos on the use of the jo, short stick, include "Aikido Saito's Jo", ISBN: B00030LP0G, which is available through amazon.com and "Iwama Ryu Aikido Weapons" by Patricia Guerri if you can find it.

It is easy to find books on various styles of stick fighting. But video sources on particular styles of stick fighting such as the use of the jo are relatively rare. You might also want to consider Judo champion Gene LeBell's series of videos, "Grappling with a Club" which is a four volume video series and "The Grappling Club Master" which is package including 2 DVD's and one book.

I hope the information given above has been usefull to you.
