Summary: great martial arts cast that could have added more
Comment: The best thing about Death Match when I first watched it was the great mix of martial art actors in the beginning dredits, including:

Ian Jacklin (Kickboxer 3, Ring of Fire 2)
Martin Kove (Karate Kid Series, Shootfighter)
Matthias Hues (Kickboxer 2, Black Belt)
Nicholas Hill (Bloodsport 2, Fists of Iron)
Michele Krasnoo (Kickboxer 4)
Eric Lee (Talons of The Eagle, Ring of Fire)
Steven Vincent Leigh (Ring of Fire, Deadly Bet)
Benny Urquidez (Wheels on Meals, Bloodmatch)

Unfortunately, despite the great cast, some of these are mere cameo appearances (such as Benny Urquidez) and the others have given much better performances, especially with martial arts skills, in their other starring films.

Despite the disapointment, the movie is still slightly above average than most Martial Arts flicks. The story consists of illegal cage fighting and betting, which is usually always fun to watch, however, the cage fights are not nearly as exciting as say Shootfighter. The acting isn't too bad, and despite the fact that 1/2 the formentioned actors don't show off their martial arts skills, it is great to see such an abundant cast together in one film.

Another disspointment is Matthias Hues. While he plays his usuall villain self, and does it convincingly well once again, his climactic fight is one of the most disspointing of all his films - short in time, lacking great skills, and just a bad ending fate.

Death Match is still a good movie overall. But the skills of these actors are above what the film offers.

Comment: this is a relatively simple by the book good guy vs bad guy martial arts bash up movie, EXCEPT for some reason it works. The fights scenes are good, the stars look great (Rennee Ammann/Griffin is gorgeous) and overall its a bloody good movie

Comment: This is a great movie and has very good fight scenes and usual type of storyline in the average martial arts B Grade movie. John Larson (Ian Jacklin) a former kickboxing champion is faced with the greatest challenge of his life. His best friend Nick (Nick Hill) an aspiring fighter, becomes part of an illegal underground martial arts circuit. Its combatants fight to the death for the entertainment and pleasure of the blood thirsty promoter Paul Landis (Martin Kove) and his brutal heavy/right hand man Mark Vanic (Matthias Hues). To gain his friends freedom, Larson must infiltrate L.A's underworld and do one thing he sworn never to do again...go into the ring. The stakes are raised when he unwittingly becomes embroiled in a battle with L.A's illegal weapons trade. With the help from reporter Danielle Richardson (Renee Ammann) Larson lays his own life on the line to save his friend but in order to find him he is faced with having to fight in the Death Match but is being trained by Benny (Benny 'the jet; Urquidez) and is given all the advice he can muster that will help him become the champion of the circuit.

Comment: If you like martial arts films, this should be added to your collection. Now it might not be top notch, but it's worth it for the fight seens. I recommend it to anyone who likes direct to video martial arts films. Pass the word along
