Editorial Reviews:

This tape is an overview of the Shorin Ryu Karate style and explains the essence of the system on one videotape! Okinawa, Japan is the birthplace of karate. Its practice there dates back to ancient times. Shorin Ryu karate is the oldest and most traditional form of Okinawan karate and is based on pure self-defense. Shorin Ryu karate was founded by Bushi "Warrior" Matsumura (1797-1889) who was the bodyguard of the Okinawan king. The Shorin Ryu karate style contains many secret and hidden techniques which are revealed on this exciting video! These techniques include body shifting, pressure points, strikes, kicks, take downs and Tuite joint-locking and grappling. Shorin Ryu karate is practiced mainly by performing the traditional kata of the style. This video includes a complete explanation of the hidden movements and fighting techniques of the kata Pinan Shodan, Naihanchi Shodan, Passai Dai and Kusanku. It also includes demonstrations and explanations of Sparring,! Ippon kumite, Yakusoku kumite (two-man sparring kata 1-6), Bo Kata Sunakake no Kon, Kumibo Sandan (two-man Bo fighting kata), Sai/Bo Ippon Kumite and Self-Defense Applications. A one of a kind video that truly captures "The Essence of Shorin Ryu Karate" and much more.... 60 minutes

Summary: "Spuriana" I can do without!
Comment: I always tell our readers not to buy videos unless they are made by a respected instructor and come from a quality video production company. So when I saw this video advertised the first thing I did was to check on the Amazon.com site "technical information" box for this video and there wasn't any. I looked for the name of the author, also absent. I searched to see what was in it and nothing was listed. I had also never heard of the director although I review martial arts videos for a living, and was therefore intrigued as to why, as this title is fairly highly rated, why anyone would buy a video without knowing anything about it. I got a copy to look at.
I should have taken my own advice. This is what I would call a collection of martial arts "spuriana," poorly edited, badly produced, and technically pathetic. If you are looking for "moves" stick with Michael Jackson, he's more athletic, a lot quicker, and carries a lot less ballast. He is also probably better at defending himself.
This video is a relic from the 1960s era (although probably recently made) when it was enough to put on a karate uniform and a black (or in this case red and white) belt and have the bravado to declare yourself a master of the martial arts to impress an audience.Today's sophisticated and well-informed consumer wants to know everything about a product before he or she commits to buying it which is why, presumably, Amazon.com provides space for this information to be included for each product. .
