Summary: Before Sly Stallone ...
Comment: A minor character in a Robert E. Howard historical story, Marvel turned it into a monthly character in the same world as Conan. Dino ("My Konk is big!") De Laurentis brought it to the big screen with director Richard Fleischer, fresh off his failed CONAN THE DESTROYER. If anything, this bugger is even worse. Now I know that is saying alot. Arnold is in it as a character who is really SUPPOSED to be Conan and Brigitte Nielson in the title role. Sandahl Bergman (Valeria in CTB) is an evil queen in pursuit of a deadly orb of power and wiping out anyone in her path.

Summary: Sonja needs no help from any man---except maybe an acting teacher
Comment: This film is campy and awful that it rates up there with Showgirls for camp value. Brigette Nielsen is wooden as the fiery haired warrior who wants to avenge her slain family. Half the time I can barely understand her when she's not wielding her sword. Poor Arnold; this was a very lousy follow-up to the great Conan series.

Summary: Arnold Schwarzenegger Calls This His Worst Movie...And Now I Know Why
Comment: Arnold Schwarzenegger has been quoted as saying that "Red Sonja" is the worst movie he has ever been in, and has been known to punish his children by making them go to their rooms and watch it. I can see why. The film is good for a campy laugh, but it is essentially a lame follow up to the "Conan" films that were so popular. It is unsurprising to see that Dino De Laurentis was involved with making this film, as it has all his trademarks: grand scale, cheesy sets, terrible over-acting, and amazing plot contrivances.

This is (surprise!) a film about vengeance set in a swords and sorcery background. Brigitte Nielsen is Red Sonja, a master warrior out to avenge her family's deaths. She is pitted against the evil Queen Gedren (Sandahl Bergman) who has stolen the talisman. The talisman (which is a ridiculous glowing orb) will destroy the world in 13 days if Sonja can't recover it. Along the way we pick up the supremely annoying child actor Ernie Reyes, Jr. who plays the arrogant Prince Tarn, and the Prince's aid, Falkon (Paul Smith), who has the patience of Job to deal with the brat.

There is much swordplay and padding, and many wacky characters and situations. I was especially amused by the giant purring tarantula that Gedren kept, and the metal "killing machine" that everyone gets to flop around with in a wet cave reminding me of Bela Lugosi dealing with the horrifying octopus in Ed Wood's masterwork "Bride of the Monster", the prime difference being that Lugosi could act.

Obviously there is a wooden romance between Arnold and Sonja, but lots of swordplay is involved in the courtship process. There are numerous gaffes in this film. I swear that in one ambush scene the bad guys are wearing blue jeans...if they aren't they are certainly the ancient precursors. There are also some puerile ruses from Gedren's comically-costumed magician and an epic conclusion involving a mammoth sword fight, an earthquake, a river of lava, and an exploding castle (which looks more like an oil well fire than anything).

This movie is worth the look for camp value alone: the acting is among the worst I have seen in a big budget film (especially from Nielsen and Reyes), the plot is ridiculous, the special effects are none to special, and characters are laughable. It is enjoyable from a "so bad it's good" perspective, and is relatively short, which helps deaden the pain. I recommend this movie to people who like camp classics.

At least on this one issue, I find myself in agreement with Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Summary: Sonja The Destroyer
Comment: I remember the trailer for this infamously weak spin-off of Conan. I saw the movie years later and laughed my head off. Unintentionally! Poor Briggite Nielson. Her career never had a chance thanks to Cobra and Red Sonja. The plot of the movie is this: Sonja(Brigitte Nielson) hails from a tribe of female warriors who were killed off by an evil queen Gedren(Sandahl Bergman). Queen Gedren steals the orb the female warriors were protecting and uses it to destroy each town she passes by. Sonja goes on a hunt for Queen Gedren and later finds out that Gedren killed her parents. On her quest she reluctantly joins Kalidor(Arnold Schwarzenegger), an arrogant prince named Tarn(Ernie Reyes Jr.) and his bumbling idiotic servant, Falkon(Paul L. Smith). Together they go on a hunt for Queen Gedren and the orb.
The acting is subpar and the action scenes are soso. I mean Briggite Neilson looks so emotionally distant. For someone who lost her whole family as well as her female comrades, Sonja doesnt look fazed at all. Arnold is playing his usual stoic role and Ernie Reyes Jr.... what an annoying snot-nosed brat he was in this movie! The moronic manservant Falkon had more personality than these guys. The action scenes are the only redeeming moments of the movie even though sometimes they fall flat. The scene where they fight the mechanical sea creature made me laugh till my ribs ached. The dialogue is a hoot also. Its as if the screenwriter thought that nobody was going to take the movie seriously so he gave everybody stupid lines to work with. I can only recommend this movie to you if you like your epic movies extra campy. Anyone else dont bother.

Summary: I'm In The Red
Comment: Yup, we've all seen it, and some of us are a tad ashamed to admit that we like it. After all, if you liked Conan and the Beastmaster, it's only natural that you would have checked this out as well. Brigitte Nielsen makes her debut as the fiery haired valkyrie warrior who's out on a mission for revenge. In the Conan tradition, some evil queen killed her family and had her soldiers violate her. So now she hates and distrusts men, but we all know she'll get over that within the course of the film coz she has to team up with three male warriors. The evil queen has also stolen some glo-stick type talisman that is going to destroy the world in a few days. So now Sonja is not only gonna avenge herself, but save the world!! A real Two for One deal if I ever saw one. This movie definitely comes across as a bit more cornball than the Conan films. It looks rather low budget(not quite Deathstalker low budget, but low), and the actors seem to be taking all of this silliness rather seriously. Arnold seems a bit bored by this barbarian stuff by now and pretty much plays second fiddle to Nielsen. Nielsen may be a cutie, but she's not gonna win any awards for acting. Sandahl Bergman is a rather hammy and cliched villain. Probably the biggest flaw of this movie is that damnable kiss of death of casting an irritating loud mouthed child as one of the lead characters. This would be Ernie Reyes, jr(he was also in The Last Dragon) who you'll be wishing a slow death on from the moment you meet him. Why do so many films do this? Do they think it's cute? But in the end, those who have grown up with this movie can't help but enjoy it in all of it's cheesy glory. Your average Harry Potter fan will probably just scoff. Oh, well. It's still a fun addition to Manly Barbarian Movie Night. Here's a big shock: They're remaking it!
