This is the second part of a comprehensive course in Goju Ryu karate presented by Morio Higaonna, 9th Dan, Hanshi, one of the foremost exponents of the style. Of incalculable value to enthusiasts of all levels, it deals with the kata Sanchin, long regarded as the heart of the this karate system. According to Chojun Miyagi, the Founder of Goju Ryu Karate: "Sanchin, Tensho and Naihanchi are the fundamental kata. The aim of practising these is to develop good posture and form, correct breathing methods, and correct harmonisation of the breath with the movements...the kihongata teach how to focus energy correctly and in harmony with our breathing. This in turn promotes a strong spirit and physique and develops budo power or ki." It is Sanchin kata that develops the explosive power that the style is famous for, and the ability to remain calm and relaxed in combat that is the hallmark of the effective fighter. This program includes the history of Sanshin from its roots in Southern China to the present; its performance—ancient and modern forms, and Sanshin Shime, the "testing" of the Sanchin performer. Filmed in studio using multiple cameras for maximum clarity it is presented as a series of detailed lectures and demonstrations that are easily accessed using the comprehensive navigational menus. Higaonna explains in detail, with safety cautions, how to help a student train in this kata. This would not be a good substitute for a live instructor if you are beginning training, but it is a fabulous clarification. The instructing techniques are consistent with what I experienced in Okinawa, Japan. This DVD inspires me to train more!
