Customer Rating: Summary: The thrill is gone (apologies to BB) Comment: This Hallmark type romance has an excellent cast, great scenery and set design but still fails to sweep the viewer up in my opinion. This is due to the script which violates Aristotle's first rule of good screen play, tell the story in the shortest time frame possible. Secondly, you have to make the audience engage with the characters in the first few minutes, after that you lose their sympathy (and interest).
This story attempts to cover two romances over a 30 year period. Furthermore the romance between the two main characters played by Diane Keeton and Sam Shepard is tainted by the fact that Shepard's character is married to a woman who has an undisclosed condition that keeps her confined to a hospital bed. Therefore he is a serial philander who bonks his best friend's wife before turning his attentions to the widow played by Keeton. Keeton's inherent kookiness is not necessarily a good thing for her character. To complicate matters, apparently Shepard's teenage son falls for Keeton's daughter but they can never seem to get it together either.
The story drags on and the characters can never seem to make commitments to themselves or anyone else. Some might see it as romantic but the story is not resolved very satisfactorily in my opinion although it is probably very close to what happens in real lives. Personally I watch movies to transcend real life.
Customer Rating: Summary: Pleasant romance Comment: Diane Keaton and Diane Lane, two of my favorites, bring this movie to life. Sam Shephard is, as always, dynamic in his role. The story is only a bit predictable; there are a couple of surprises. The acting is superb throughout. Definitely worth having on your shelf if you are a Keaton, Lane, or Shephard fan. We'll certainly be watching it again!
Customer Rating: Summary: Love is difficult Comment: Reece (Sam Shepard) loves Carol (Diane Keaton), and Carol loves Reece, but Reece can't commit to Carol until it's too late. Also, Reece's son, Tom (Robert Patrick), loves Katherine (Diane Lane) and, eventually, Katherine loves Tom. But, Reece has to step in and make Tom go after Katherine so that Tom doesn't suffer the same fate as he (Reece) does. On the whole, this little film, which was shot mostly in Lockhart, Texas, and directed by Pete Masterson, ain't too bad. The actors do a good job, and the movie shows us viewers a little more about the joys, sorrows, and complications of life and love. It's an enjoyable film.
Customer Rating: Summary: A MUST SEE!!! BEST LOVE STORY, EVER!!!! Comment: This is, without a doubt, the best love story. Diane Keaton and Sam Shepherd are terrific. A great all-star cast. Be prepared to laugh and cry. Great story from beginning to end. You'll want to watch it again and again.
Customer Rating: Summary: Introspective... Comment: This has been one of my favorite movies for a long time, so I finally bought it. No falsehoods here - the relationships portrayed are so real that the viewer wants to grab the characters like old friends and counsel them. This film leaves us all needing to re-evaluate what is going on with our own lives.
