From national bestselling author James Clemens, whose Wit'Ch novels have been compared to the fantasies of Guy Gavriel Kay and George R. R. Martin, comes the first novel in a new series-about a world where mysterious gods hold powerful secrets, knights walk in the shadows, and demons claw up from the darkness, as one man struggles to prove he didn't kill a god.

Customer Rating: Summary: Amazing new world Comment: A new and exciting series by the author of The Banned and the Banished (Wit'ch) series, the Godslayer Chronicles have definite potential. I like the very unique world that Clemens has created for his Godslayer Chronicles. This is definitely a story I'll keep following.
Four thousand years ago, the Hundred Gods left the hinterlands of Myrillia - where they had been kept in a state of insanity by the burning of their Graces (the various fluids of their body), picked a section of land somewhere in the Nine Lands, and created a bond with the land by bleeding into the soil. This allowed the Gods to gain their sanity, but lose their ability to travel throughout the lands. They each have nine attendants (called Hands) to gather and care for one of the nine Humours of their bodies, and the mysterious Shadow Knights serve by keeping the peace.
Then the unthinkable happens - one of the Gods is killed. The only witness is a former Shadow Knight Tylar de Noche - now living in disgrace - who goes to the aid of the dying God and finds himself imbued with Her Grace now. Hunted by just about everyone - due to the belief that he was somehow responsible for Her death - he needs to discover how and why this has happened.
Dart is a young lady who is attending the school for the Gods attendants, and lives in fear that her secrets will be discovered. She is followed by a mysterious creature that only she can see that she calls Pupp. When she is picked to be the Hand of Blood for Chrism - the first God to settle the lands - she can hardly believe her fortune. However, when she and her friend Laurell (Hand of Tears) accidentally stumble upon a strange, twisted ceremony being held by Chrism, she realizes that they must somehow help to stop the spread of darkness over the Lands of Myrillia.

Customer Rating: Summary: Blessed Humours Comment: Shadowfall centers on Tylar de Noche, a former Shadowknight who is accused of being a godslayer as he is the only surviving witness to the murder of a goddess. From there the story takes on the life of a mystery tale as the protagonist and his allies must discover who is behind the murder and what their motives may be.
This was a good story and a fast read. Clemens shows some remarkable talent for imagery and storytelling. At times the action was fast and fierce and James easily pulls the reader along. At times this was slower and methodical, allowing the reader to catch up with the plot and reveal hidden secrets.
One interesting aspect of the book/series is the authors use of humours. Humours are the fluids of the body: blood, "seed" or mense, sweat, tears, salvia, phlegm, yellow bile, and black bile. Early medical science was based in a person's humours being balanced as an indicator of good health, and in truth there is something to this notion. In Shadowfall, there are beings known as gods who "grace" humankind with their humours, each fluid having a different purpose.
I enjoyed the story, but for all its world shattering scope didn't come off quite as epic as it should have. Nonetheless, this is an entertaining story and is continued in a second volume titled Hinterland.
Customer Rating: Summary: Tough start but good read Comment: OK so it too my a while to get into this book. I really enjoyed James Clemens other series "The banned and the banished" so I stuck to it. I was well paid for my patience. Clemens sets the stage thoroughly the revs the engine. He lets the characters speak for themselves and plays the story line like a master pianist. All the twists and turns don't compete for your attention but work together for one solid composition. Was excited to pick up book 2 "Hinterlands" once I finished "Shadowfall".
Customer Rating: Summary: So Disappointed! Comment: I loved loved LOVED the Banned and the Banished series and could not wait to get my hands on Shadowfall. Did the same person write both series? Not only is the premise based on the five humours ridiculous not to mention nasty I really didn't care about the characters. I hope the next series is more similar to the Banned and the Banished.
