To lovers of romance, there is nothing unusual in the story of how Amechiyo, an exiled prince, meets the exotic and mysterious girl, Tanuki, in the forest and becomes smitten with her beauty. However, when he discovers she is actually the Princess Raccoon, "usual" takes a holiday, as the unlikely pair fall in love, despite everyone's warnings. When tragedy strikes after the celebration of the Princess's un-birthday, only true love can save her! Legendary director Seijun Suzuki?s 50-year career reaches a milestone with this surreal musical comedy about love, deception and soda-water rain. Stirring up a broth of Kabuki, opera, animation, and adding dashes of pop culture, theater staging and rap music, Princess Raccoon is an eclectic masterpiece. Starring Zhang Ziyi ("Memoirs of a Geisha", "House of Flying Daggers") in the title role, this enchanting movie celebrates the sheer joy of love and film.

Customer Rating: Summary: Great Fantasy Movie, Post-Punk Comment: Loved this movie. I'm a westerner, spent time in Japan, loved this live-action fairy-tale love story. Even though the writer/director is somewhere in his 80's, he has a funny, surprising and high-energy style that will enchant you. If you're used to Disney and Pixar, maybe you should give it a miss, because it's off-beat and surprising--but I'm buying a copy for myself--loved it.
Customer Rating: Summary: Too exotic Comment: I'm part Japanese but I found this musical is so alien to my American-bred sensibilities that it seemed very strange and creepy. It colorful in a gaudy way with very cartoonish qualities. At least, it has the adorable Zhang Ziyi at the center (she's speaks mostly Chinese in this Japanese film).
The best part of the DVD for me was the behind-the-scenes featurette which focused on Zi. I was surprised that she switched to English a few times when talking with her Chinese/Japanese translator (he was, I believe, Japanese). And there's a "cute" moment when a little girl, an extra, speaks to Zi in English (you'll understand the quotes after seeing it).
This one, you might want to rent first before deciding to purchase.
