Editorial Reviews:

Holy Batman! All the villains from Arkham Asylum have escaped and it's up to Batman and Robin to stop them. Play as Batman and his sidekick Robin as you build, drive, swing and fight your way through Gotham City. Then, jump into the story from the other side and play as Batman's foes. There is no rest for the good (or evil).

Play through the game in Story Mode from both the hero and villain sides Replay any level in Freeplay Mode with any characters you've unlocked. Access previously hidden areas to find additional rewards and bonus content Collect LEGO studs and special LEGO bricks throughout the game to unlock tons of extra content including special power-ups and bonus levels

Summary: Lego Batman Rocks Our Blocks Off
Comment: Maybe you have the trusty PlayStation 2 and are unwilling to shell out a car payment or two to for the PlayStation 3. Fear not! They are still releasing new games for the PS2 and one of the latest is Lego Batman.

Released just in time to ride the coattails of the latest movie, this game has nothing to do with the film and is a nothing like it. You play as Batman and Robin, taking on numerous classic foes like the Joker, Penguin, and Poison Ivy. As you advance however, you can take on the role of the villains, which adds a really great element to the game. Following the same formula of previous games in the series, the characters and various objects in the game are all Lego bricks. No blood and guts here, just unadulterated Lego on Lego violence.

The storyline is original and campy fun. Since the characters don't speak and there aren't even subtitles, it relies heavily on physical humor and expressions. Robin is an idiot and the interactions between him and Batman in the cut scenes make them really enjoyable to watch. A lot of the humor is subtle and would probably be lost on some kids.

The game is fairly straightforward and is closer to a puzzle than a fighting game. The enemies up until the main villains provide no real challenge at all. Just press one button repeatedly and your duo will dispose of them quickly. The challenge comes when you have to figure out how to get past the obstacles in the game. Besides switching between the two characters you can pick up suits along that way that give you various extra abilities such as being flame retardant or magnetic boots. These obstacles however are also the game's biggest downfall.

Oftentimes you'll be at a complete an utter loss as to what to do next, and it's not because of some clever puzzle, but because the switch or whatever you need to pull doesn't stand out at all. There are some instances where it's obvious what you're supposed to do (turn a wheel) but how to do is non-intuitive (stand on it to make it rotate, which defies physics, instead of using your hands like any normal superhero would actually do). This leaves you frustrated rather than feeling a sense of accomplishment.

On the upside are the levels where you get to pilot one of the various vehicles in the game. Sometimes you're racing around in the Batmobile or flying your Batwing. Other times you hop into a Lego forklift and lay the smack down on every trashcan and streetlight in sight. No matter what your vehicle of destruction is, all are a blast and do a good job of breaking up the monotony of the standard gameplay.

Finally, the reply value of the game is really high because there are a ton of unlockable awards and characters that you can then go back to the same levels and use to complete them in an entirely different way. This will keep your kids coming back for more for quite a while.

Ignoring the frustrating obstacles, the game is very fun. As there are a lot of beatdowns that go on, you'll probably want to hold off if you have young kids. For everyone else, get your baterangs ready for some Lego block destruction!

Summary: Warning Corrupted Memory Glitch
Comment: I have two playstation 2 game consoles with 4 different memory cards. I just got the game on Friday my kids absolutely love it. Unfortunately, I have to send it back because of a defect some people are experiencing with not being able to save the game. The glitch will tell you that you have corrupted data and you will not be able to save the game no matter what you do. I'm going to buy this game again and hopefully will not have the same problem. We love the lego series, but this glitch is a pain. I had to find out about this problem through different gaming sites but nothing was said about it on the Warner Brothers site, how disappointing.

Summary: Fun but not too fun.
Comment: To begin, I am a huge fan of all the LEGO games. I have played every one of them, and I must say that Batman doesn't deliver as it ought. Where the Starwars Lego games were comical and entertaining while challenging and crafty, Batman lacks the funny video clips and insists on making the person playing frustrated trying to "figure out" the next move. The game doesn't flow near as well as the other games do.
If you love playing the LEGO games, I suggest this game. But if you are easily frustrated and don't have the walkthrough, don't bother. Overall, this game gets a 3 star rating.

Summary: BATMAN gets "blocked" in LEGO
Comment: This is the fourth game in the LEGO series and aimed at DC Comics fans of Batman and Batman fans of all ages!
Like the other LEGO games is better to play with the aid of a second player, but this time unlike the LEGO StarWars and Indiana Jones games, puzzles and tasks can be performed without a second player. The puzzles here are challenging but simpler than previous LEGO game releases. But again players must revisit levels time and time again to gather the bat-canisters and red blocks. If all are collected new levels will open.

The controls are very easy to handle/operate, I must mention Batman and most of his friends have special combos when attacking the bad guys, push round and round buttons or round square for alternate moves.

Your mission is to become Batman or any of his allies including Robin, and later as you unlock them; Alfred, Batgirl, Nightwing, Commisioner Gordon and others., to capture the classic super villains of Gotham City including Joker, Catwoman, Penguin, Riddler, Poison Ivy, Mr. Freese and others. Once you finished an entirestoryline mission, the game will unlock Arkham Assylum and lets you play as the villains! Depending the number and location of missions you have completed as the good guys, that's how many characters you'll unlock on the bad guys side of the game. This is probably the most original aspect of the game as it lets you become a bad boy or girl and wreck havoc in Gotham City.
Once you complete a mission in story mode you can revisit it many times over in free play and use new characters and vehicles you have unlocked. In the villain side of Arkham Asylum you can create your personal hero/villian male or female, (I tried to recreate the original Batwoman by Bob Kane) in the same manner as in the Lego Indiana Jones game.

Like its previous Lego games, you must find special canisters, red blocks and complete the meter on the screen to unlock all kinds of extra goodies.

The game's soundtrack music is taken directly from the Batman 1989 feature film. The mini movies are very funny and quite original. Though it might feel as a repetition of previous games to expert gamers, to Batman and Lego fans is quite the treat! I highly recommend it for all fans young and old like me, lol!

Note that all characters have their own distictive animation and movements and expressions aside from the ones in the mini movies.
