Editorial Reviews:

One of the most influential bands in music, ranked eighth on the list of the biggest-selling groups in history, Metallica unveils its ninth studio album, Death Magnetic. The band's
first album in five years, Death Magnetic is also its first with renowned producer Rick Rubin (Danzig, Slayer, System Of A Down,
Slipknot), first with bassist Robert Trujillo, and first on Warner Bros. Heavy and thrashy, unafraid to embrace the band's past yet move
into the future.

Summary: glad to see they let hammet back in the band!
Comment: this is metallica's best album since the black album. they have brought back the slow intro's for every song and MOST importantly they brought back hammet's solo's. glad to see they ditched longtime producer bob rock. this is old metallica with a new aged twist. granted this album is still slightly watered down, it's still a breath of fresh air. if you expect to hear tracks like you did in ..and justice for all, you will be disapointed. if you approach this album with a open mind you will be pleased! a must have for metallica fans.

Summary: Out of ideas
Comment: I'm wondering what album everyone else is listening to? I have tons of Metallica cds from Master to Reload, Garage Days, S&M.; There's very little I don't like on each cd. I do think the music on Death Magnet sounds like the "old" days, Black, etc..but the lyrics? Obviously getting off the drugs and getting some counseling has killed the ability to write lyrics that mean something. Unforgiven III - sailing? What? I think better lyrics would be "I don't have anything to sing about now, but I need the money cuz I used it all on drugs. I know my lyrics stink, just call me unforgiven again, again, oh yeah and again." If there were no words to this cd, I'd probaby enjoy it alot more. I've tried to love it, I've tried to give it a break, but I'm ashamed that I bought it for my son's birthday. I should'a gone with his first choice of the new Disturbed cd.

Summary: This is a review from a lifetime fan (not because of freaking GH)
Comment: This CD is a must buy if your a Metallica fan. I bought this like 3 weeks before it came out on amazon and had first day delivery, but just decided to review it now. This CD is more like earlier albums in a way more than St. Anger, Load or Reload. It features some great songs like All nightmare long, The day that never comes, my apocalypse, the unforgiven 3 and many others. Just take my word for it.....this cd won't let you down. (PS I OWN EVERY Metallica CD)

Summary: Who knew they still had it in them?
Comment: I became a Metallica fan, as a teenager. I think Ride the lightning and Master of Puppets are two of the best metal albums of all time, and Justice is quite good too. Kill em all and Metallica had their good moments too, but one was full of songs that sounded alike, and the other was too poppy. I viewed load-reload-disc1 of garage inc, with a little more of an open mind than some, but they were even poppier. I kind of view them as another band. What got me to quit on them was them suing their fans and everyone else they could. Never paid for this one, got it from a friend. They are definately money grubbing bastards, but damn if they can't come up with some good music. We won't get into st anger which I can't believe people paid money for.

This one's actually a good album. At least the first half. The musicianship is solid, all the way through. The vocals aren't too bad, he'll never be able to top the lightning puppets days, but that's ok. The sound of the guitars reminds me of Megadeth, but I can't remember which album, I'm thinking Rust In Piece, in sound not style. This is far and away the most energetic album they've come out with since Justice, and it might be the most energetic album I've listened to this year, of albums that have come out. The drumming's pretty good, who knew lars could still play? The guitar work is great. Hearing it made me want to listen to the old ones. I'm reluctantly re-adding them to my music collection. My problem mostly being them suing people, not selling out.

My only complaints would be for one the production, as many have mentioned. I noticed the clipping, not enough to make me stop listening. Metal has never been a genre for good production, look as Black Sabbath's Ozzy years. Also the second half is noticibly weaker than the first. I have trouble remembering these songs still.

That Was Just Your Life 8/10 Starts with a slow intro before erupting into a song full of thrashy goodness. This has to be the fastest song they've come up with since the And Justice album. Some great riffs, decent vocal performance, actually a decent rhythm section.

The End Of The Line 9/10 QUICKLEY becoming one of my favorite songs of the year, definately top 2 on this album. It has a nice flow to it, another heavy song. It's slower than the last, which isn't saying much considering that one's quite fast. I love the pace of this one.

Broken, Beat & Scarred 7/10 I really didn't like this one the first couple listens, but it's growing on me. It's another up-tempo song, it can get a little repetative, but it's still good.

The Day That Never Comes 7/10 This one's ok. It's the first slower song, but for once it's not poppy. I like the clean guitar riff in the verses. The chorus is a little weak, but it's servicible. It gets heavier towards the middle and never lets up again.

All Nightmare Long 9/10 My other favorite on here. Nice slower intro, bursting into another great thrasher. Love the vocal melodies in the chorus. I'm a sucker for a good chorus. The verses are only ok, but the chorus and solo make up for it.

Cyanide 5 or 6/10 I'm not sure yet. I have trouble remembering this one. This one's slower than the other heavy songs, still has some fast parts. Musically I like it, but the song itself doesn't do a lot for me. I like that it's a change of pace.

The Unforgiven III 7/10 I guess. Another unforgiven? Really? Did we need another? As another reviewer said it doesn't resemble the others. They could've called it something else. It starts with a piano intro, which is kind of wierd on here. It's well played though. Then we get some clean guitars before the electric guitars and the verses kick in. It's a slower song. The chorus is softer. I'm still letting this one grow on me. I enjoy the guitar solo.

The Judas Kiss 7/10 The intro kind of reminds me a bit of sad but true, part of it anyway. It quickly becomes a faster song though. Some more nice riffs. The chorus is decent, but once it loses it's rhythm it lags on a bit. Overall this one's growing on me.

My Apocalypse 5/10 I don't really like this one as much. It's ok, but that's about it. The drum beat in the verses is kind of annoying, and I'm not a fan of Hetfield's vocals in the chorus. The bridge is ok. It's definately another faster one.

I gave the instrumental a pass, because I'm not a fan of instrumentals. I'm sure it's well played though.

Overall it's a pretty good album, one of the better metal releases of the year. The fact that it's a metal album is amazing in it's own right, they haven't put one out since Justice. Heck it's amazing compared the everything they came out with in the 90's, and st anger. If you like their 80's stuff then don't pass this one up.
