Customer Rating: Summary: Groundbreaking set Comment: Done back in the mid-80s, this was a groundbreaking set and the first videos done on the Indonesian art of silat in this country. Except for the occasional articles in Black Belt magazine, such as the one done in the late 60s on late, great, Rudy Terlinden and his integration of four different styles of silat, this was the only information available on video for years.
Pak Vic, who I met at the Dragon Festival in Glendale, CA a few years ago, was still in his prime, and he gives a dynamic and powerful demonstration of the various skills and techniques of silat. I've never had the privilege of training with Guru Vic myself, so I'm a big fan of his many videos. Capably assisted by other great Danny Inosanto, these videos were one way I was able to learn something of the fascinating but previously mysterious art of silat. Donn Draeger's wonderful book on Silat, from 15 years earlier, was also in my library.
The video shows the upper and lower arts, footwork and hand techniques, djurus or forms, and also some interesting demo's of coconut and bat breaking with Guru Vic breaking them with his shin, like a muai thai boxer. Very cool. Also there's some coverage of sparring and applications, entries, and takedowns.
Keep in mind these are early videos, and the many later videos that have come out since the 90s might be more polished in terms of production values, but this is still a great introductory set. I would l also recommend the two introductory videos by Rudy Terlinden. That's the only reason for the 4 stars. The information and demonstration is first-rate, coming from Gurus Vic and Danny Inosanto.
Overall, a great couple of truly pathbreaking videos that introduced Silat to the American public for the first time.
