The Way of the Martial Artist provides the practitioner with a conceptual framework for understanding their journey through the martial arts.
Martial arts is about skill, strategy and spirit. Most martial artists spend a lifetime studying only technique; never developing the mind, character and spirit. This book explains the physical, mental and spiritual milestones every martial artist should pass on their way to becoming a more mature warrior.
The soul of the martial artist begins dark; void of self-understanding. As the discovery and understanding of the self begins; the soul and character of the martial artist is formed and illuminated from within.
Martial arts are about three things: Skill, Strategy and Spirit. These are the chapters of this book. Most martial artists spend a lifetime studying only technique; never developing the mind, the character and the spirit of the martial artist. The specifics of any given style of martial arts should not be studied to the detriment of understanding how to think about and understand your progress, development and maturity as a martial artist. And always remember, the best warrior is not warlike at all, but is able to summon the warrior spirit within when it is required.

Customer Rating: Summary: Way of the Martial Artist Comment: If your interest is in the why of martial artist, not just the how, this a book well worth reading. It goes beyond the learning of katas (moves and forms) to explain why these are necessary and to fully understand the mind set of the martial artist. Anyone can be taught how to punch and kick, but why are they done in a specific manner, what is the reason behind how they are performed? This book will help the martial artist (novice or advanced) understand the why. A most useful mental tool for any successful MARTIAL ARTIST.
Customer Rating: Summary: Like reading the wisdom of Yoda! Comment: If you study martial arts, you will not become all that you can be as a martial artist until you begin to master the skills and concepts in this book! All martial arts students and instructors should study this often. It is like a modern day "Art of War".
This book really helps anyone studying martial arts understand their art. It is not focused on teaching any specific techniques, but rather on how to understand your art and how to grow. I really liked how the book provided clean, concise explanations of such basic concepts as speed, and timing and how to differentiate between them so that you can improve.
It explained an entire world of knowledge that "real" martial artists should study and understand - even the need for wilderness survival. This is one of those rare strategic and conceptual books that you can read over and over and each time it is pulling you forward, urging you to stretch your mind and body to new heights.
I can tell I will be using this book for many years to help me stay on track with how to approach my overall study and maturity in self-defense and martial arts - even the development of my character and conduct as a martial practictioner.
