Editorial Reviews:

It used to be that “stuff” made you cool. That is so twentieth century. Jeff Yeager, the man dubbed The Ultimate Cheapskate by Matt Lauer on Today, offers a completely fresh take on personal finance, teaching us how to enjoy life more by spending less. He will show you how to buy less stuff, retire young, and live financially free, while you make a positive difference in people’s lives and save the planet along the way. The Ultimate Cheapskate’s Road Map to True Riches lays out the practices and principles that have made cheap the new cool.

Live within your means at thirty and stay there. The Ultimate Cheapskate was living well on what he earned at thirty, so when he made more money, he saved every penny. Now he is “selfishly” employed, doing work he loves and helping others.

Do for yourself what you could have others do for you. Cheapskates are die-hard do-it-yourselfers. It’s all about having the right tools, and The Ultimate Cheapskate will get you started.

Pinch the dollars and the pennies will pinch themselves. It’s not the $3 cup of coffee; it’s the big-ticket decisions that determine whether you’ll be financially free. So buy a house, not a castle.

The Ultimate Cheapskate’s Road Map to True Riches promises a quality of life you cannot buy, a sense of satisfaction you cannot fake, and an appreciation for others and for the planet that gives life value. Open your road map and prepare to discover the true joys of financial freedom.

Summary: Practical and funny financial advice!
Comment: Jeff Yeager might consider himself the "Ultimate Cheapskate", but we could probably all use his advice to become just a little cheaper ourselves. Why? Well not only will it pad your pocketbook, but you will likely find a little more peace of mind and happiness in living a life that does not revolve around spending money. In this book, Yeager shares money advice presented with humor and commonsense. It's aimed at helping the reader think about why we spend money and if we really need to.

This book really provoked my feelings about how I spend money and also what my goals are for earning money. I thought Yeager presented practical information in a funny way and also a way that likely makes sense for many people. It's advice that can be followed by most reasonable people. So far, by following this advice I have figured out ways to cut costs in my household without sacrificing our standard of living. It's helping my wallet and my way of life!

Summary: Buy the Book
Comment: Personally, I am not a fan of 'self help' financial books. Lately however, I have taken to reading them for their sheer entertainment value. As someone whose finaces have always been in order, I find much of the contents of these works funnier than the late-night comedy shows. Most of them can be consigned to the trash without any further ado. Well, hooray for those of us who posess a true "money ethic", as I refer to it. Here is an exception to the rule! Author Jeff Yeager has created a practical guide for the frugal. Frugality is seen by many as eccentric and quirky and in some quarters, downright unpatriotic! Frugality does not mean doing without. It can be a blueprint for a less harrieed existance, not to mention a life that actually means more, not less. More free time, anyone? More money in the bank, anyone? More fun? More imagination? One of the things I enjoyed most about this book was that each chapter stands on its' own. Follow the common sense advice of just one chapter and seriously modify your life. You won't want to stop with just one chapter, however. The author's wonderful sense of humor and writing style will see you through the whole book in short order. Follow the common sense advice of the entire work and change your life completely. You will never look at money and material possessions the same way again. Although this book was written before this nations's current economic woes really got cranked up, its' appearance now seems singularly appropriate. Good timing, Jeff! Get yourself a copy of this book and explore the possibilites in every single aspect of your life. Highly recommended.

Summary: Laugh Your Way to a New Mindset
Comment: A refreshing and hilarious read! This book invites you to change the way you think about the cycle of earning, spending, earning, spending, ad infinitum. The book is (THANKFULLY) not about washing and reusing your paper towels and ziploc bags--it is about being SATISFIED with "enough." I laughed so hard that I woke my husband up from a dead sleep (guess I'll be reading in the living room from now on).

Summary: Live Within Your Means
Comment: The author describes saving money as a fiscal fasting.
That is, a person needs to find ways to navigate the
day without spending money or spending the minimum amount
of money. The formal spreadsheet approach is recommended
to itemize costs and highlight key spending juncture points.

The consumer has multiple goals:
1) live within your means
2) Don't underestimate the power of not spending money
or limiting spending
3) Discretion is the key in making spending decisions.
4) Do things yourself. Buy the right tools and use the internet.
5) Negotiate !
6) Pinch the dollars and the pennies will fall.

Wash your own car, learn to cut the grass, rake the leaves,
shovel the snow, clean your own house etc. Splurge
occasionally on a good dinner. Some of the most
discriminating savers learn to live without a car and
shop the internet often.

Much of this material is known. Some consumers need this
information as a catalyst to action- particularly spendthrifts.

Summary: Not enough suggestions, more about changing thought process
Comment: If you are looking for good tips to save money, this book is not for you. If you are looking to change your mindset about spending money and don't mind strange vulgar references, this book could be right up your alley.

Yeager spends a lot of time discussing a change in mindset regarding money, his "Money Steps" to making financial decisions. Most of this is really common sense and available for free on the internet. His concrete ideas for saving money are few and far between and some of those are not very good. He takes the reader on a shopping trip to the dollar store, which is one of his favorite stores to shop in. I've found that most of the time, the deals at the dollar store are not deals at all because the packaging is much smaller than what you would get at a traditional store. He does not discuss unit pricing in this section at all.

I was disappointed with the book. I'm glad I borrowed it from the library rather than purchasing it.
